In Christmas on Breaker's Point, the prequel to the contemporary romance Independence Island series, Mallory developed the idea to encourage friends to offer needed services to the islands through mobile businesses. Mallory's business provides the islands with a mobile bookstore/coffee shop; but, can Mallory make the business self-supporting?

Book One of the series, Dual Power of Convenience: Merriweather Island, introduces Lyla. She has come from the desert to Merriweather Island to work at Danforth Hall.

Sassy and sarcastic Mallory and anxiety-ridden Lyla meet when Lyla arrives needing help.

It's clear from the beginning of the book Lyla has a past to leave behind.

Working at Danforth Hall poses its own challenges when the locals view Lyla as an interloper, without authority to oversee management and changes at the Hall.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, the owner of Danforth Hall deals with the challenges of a wealthy business owner such as women throwing themselves at him, government coups, and losing his property to insurgents.

To solve their mutual problems, Richard and Lyla agree to a marriage of convenience where Lyla will have the freedom to manage Danforth Hall and Richard will be able to avoid designing women. On opposite sides of the world, this marriage will head off all of the relationship pitfalls both Richard and Lyla wish to avoid.

That is until Richard returns to Danforth Hall to take up residence.

Can Lyla trust Richard?

Dual Power of Convenience is definitely, a light, summer read.

It’s a super quick read & I enjoyed the cute story.

Christmas on Breaker's Point made me homesick for these islands.

I liked the sweet aspects of Dual Power of Convenience -- girl meets idyllic island, girl meets house, girl marries guy, girl falls in love with husband over meals and managing his inherited home.

The greatest story conflict revolves around anxiety and trust. Because of the trauma in her past, Lyla is afraid to trust a man; but, knows she can trust God.

Richard gently encourages Lyla to trust the Lord while he focuses on obeying the Lord.

In that way, Richard explains, Lyla doesn't have to worry about trusting him.

Lyla is dealing with fear, anxiety, and trust. While her anxieties and mine are not the same, reading about a character's struggles helps me admit some of my current anxieties.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

I've been contemplating what this passage says for me about fear & anxiety.

This author excels at showing us the action and the dynamic changes in characters but these are not as evident or as developed as in Dual Power of Convenience.

I don't see the development of friendship between Mallory and Lyla. Sometimes, it seems Mallory is annoyed by Lyla. In an early chapter, something shifts between Mallory and Lyla, but I cannot place my finger on what shifts because Mallory continues to seem annoyed.

While Lyla's past comes to light, the usual development I generally see in a Chautona Havig book simply isn't here. By comparison, Christmas on Breaker’s Point deals with genuine life issues of love, loss, and friendship in meaningful ways.

Despite wanting to love this book, because the prequel was the typical Chautona Havig book I love, I have no emotional investment with this book -- it was a cute story of friendship, a marriage of convenience, and trust.

I like it, I just don't love it.
